The full monty
The Full Monty is a 1997 British comedy film. It tells the story of six unemployed men, four of them former steel workers, who decide to form a male striptease act in order to gather enough money to get somewhere else and for main character Gaz to be able to see his son. Despite the film being a comedy, it conveys to the audience about un employment isusues as well as the working class culture. The opening of the film shows that shenfield was an upcoming area. The are is reffered to as the city of steel. This is like to say that shenfield was the place to be. The city was strong and upcoming. The people in the area liked spending their money in local night clubs as well as going to work. The begiining therefore helps to aid viewsers in knoiwing the difference of shenfield back then and now when the film was made. It also makes the film understandable and viewable for a wider audience. The men smoking whilst at the job club suggests that smoking was a trademark for working class male. Garry’s home is also different to his son’s mothers boyfriend as there is a car in the drive, a clear and clean footpath and triple glazing windows referred to as by Garry which helps to show the difference between the working class male however in Garry’s case the un employed to the middle class. It represents the working class male as not having enough money to live up to the social needs; Garry’s wife probably left him because of the living standards and hooked up with a middle class male which shows how the different in class can affect certain people as Garry cannot even see his son that much. The empty factory in the film shows that Shenfield has been deserted. It represents the downfall of Shenfield and shows the difference from Shenfield as a upcoming city to a working class area. The regional accents help to show that the characters are not posh. The film surprised the critics when it was first released, earning mostly positive reviews. The Full Monty won the BAFTA Award for Best Film in 1997. It was nominated for a total of four Academy Awards: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Music Score, and Best Original Screenplay. In 1997 the Academy Award for Best Original Score was split up into two categories: Dramatic and Musical or Comedy. In light of 1997's big winner, Titanic, the movie won only the Oscar for Best Original Music Score (Musical or Comedy) by Anne Dudley, with the Best Picture and Best Director Oscars going to Titanic and the Best Original Screenplay Oscar going to Ben Affleck and Matt Damon for Good Will Hunting. In 2000, readers of Total Film magazine voted The Full Monty the 49th greatest comedy film of all time.
